Red Tent campaign to hold solidarity “HOMES FOR ALL” Sleepover

Red Tent, a national campaign calling for a funded national housing strategy, will be holding a red tent solidarity sleepover Friday night at Science World.  The red tents will form the words “HOMES FOR ALL” when viewed from above.

CANADA’S NATIONAL HOUSING BILL PASSES 2ND READING

On September 30 2009 a second reading of a bill to establish a national housing strategy was narrowly passed by parliament. As it goes to committee for possible amendments, the fight now is to keep its integrity and ensure it becomes legislation.

Citywide Housing Coalition Helps UBCM Housing Resolution Pass

A proposed City of Vancouver housing resolution urging the provincial and federal governments to work together to create a national housing strategy and meet the housing needs of British Colombians was almost overlooked at the recent Union of BC Municipalities convention. Vancouver City COPE Councillor Ellen Woodsworth alerted CHC to its omission. The resolution had not been tabled by the UBCM Resolutions Recommendation Committee because it was considered to be too similar to previous UBCM resolutions. Citywide Housing Coalition argued that UBCM silence was tantamount to sending senior government a message of approval. Not only that, but the motion had been endorsed by 9 other municipalities. Happily, Councillor Woodsworth had no trouble getting the resolution approved.

STANDS for Housing will resume on street-corners throughout BC on Saturday, October 17 2009, from 1—2 PM. Last Spring 4000 people from 108 organizations rallied for affordable housing in 17 BC communities. Banners and brochures are available from CALM. More information:
